　　：A clever boy

　　聰明的男孩

　　It was a very hot summer afternoon. The sun was shining brightly. A very tall and fat woman was walking along the street. She felt uneasy because a schoolboy was following her closely. She began to walk faster, and the boy walk faster, too. At last the woman stopped. She turned round and looked at the boy.

　　夏天的一個炎熱的下午，明亮的陽光普照大地。一個又高又胖的女人正沿著街道走著。她感到很彆扭，因為一個小男孩正緊緊跟著她。她開始加快速度，可是男孩也加快了速度。最後，女人停下來，轉過身去看著那個孩子。

　　"Tell me, sorry," she asked. "Why are you following me?"

　　“告訴我，小傢伙，為什麼總是跟著我?”她問道。

　　"Oh, sorry, madam," said the boy, "but it's a cooler walking in the shade behind you."

　　“哦，很抱歉，女士，”男孩說道，“因為在你身後的影子裡走很涼快啊。”

　　When a boy was taking his father's dinner to the factory, he stopped for a minute to watch aworkman cleaning a sewer.

　　一個男孩給在工廠上班的爸爸送午飯，一個工人正在清理下水道，他停下來一會兒。

　　The boy said interestedly, "My mother dropped her gold watch down here yesterday."

　　男孩感興趣地說：“昨天，我媽媽的表就是在這裡掉下去的。”

　　The workman's eyes lit up. "Well, boy," he said, pretending to be careless, "Get along withyou."

　　工人眼睛一亮，“哦，小子。”他假裝不在意地說，“別胡扯。”

　　An hour later the boy came back. "Are you quite sure it was here that your mother lost herwatch down?" asked the workman.

　　一個小時後，男孩回來了。“你肯定你媽媽的表就是在這裡掉下去的嗎?”工人問道。

　　"I am sure", replied the boy with a cunning smile, "because I saw Father get it out. Yes, I saw itwith my own eyes."

　　A young man saw an elderly couple sitting down to lunch at McDonald's. He noticed that theyhad ordered one meal, and an extra drink cup. As he watched, the gentleman carefully dividedthe hamburger in half, then counted out the fries, one for him, one for her, until each had halfof them. Then he poured half of the soft drink into the extra cup and set that in front of hiswife. The old man then began to eat, and his wife sat watching, with her hands folded in her lap.

　　一個年輕人看見一對年邁的夫婦在麥當勞裡吃午餐。他注意到那對夫婦只點了單人餐，還要了一個空杯子。年輕人看見丈夫認真地把漢堡分成兩半，把薯條一根一根數出來同樣放成兩堆，一份給自己，一份放在妻子面前。之後丈夫把飲料一半倒進空杯子裡，同樣放到妻子面前。這時丈夫開始吃了，而妻子卻把手交叉攤在膝蓋上，在一旁看著。

　　The young man decided to ask if theywould allow him to purchase another meal for them so that they didn't have to split theirs.

　　年輕人決定上前問一問，看看那對夫婦是否允許他為他們再買一份，這樣他們就不用分成兩半了。

　　The old gentleman said, "Oh no. We've been married 50 years, and everything has always beenand will always be shared, 50/50."

　　老先生說道：“哦，不用了。我們已經結婚50年了，所有的東西我們都會一起分享，對半兒分。”

　　The young man then asked the wife if she was going to eat, and she replied, "It's his turn withthe teeth."
