意大利動物學家拉扎羅·斯帕爾蘭查尼還在18世紀70年代就首先開始對這種只有在顯微鏡下才能觀察到的無脊椎動物(0.1～1.2毫米長)進行研究，正是他給這種動物取名為“熊蟲”，意大利文為il tardigrado，後來拉丁文為Tardigrada。熊蟲只能在潮溼的環境下生活，淡水、溼土、樹幹、巖山以及水分充足的青苔和地衣，都是它們棲身的所在。一旦水分不夠，熊蟲則進入假死狀態。很難想象，就是100年之後，烤得乾乾的熊蟲只要有一滴水滋潤就能復活。在極其惡劣的條件下，可以說唯有熊蟲的生命力最強。經研究表明，進入假死狀態的熊蟲可以經受幾小時零下271℃的冰凍，也能耐短期零上150℃的高溫，還能經受大量的輻射和高壓。

日本科學家曾做過試驗，他們將進入假死狀態的熊蟲放進密封的容器裡，再將該容器放入盛滿水的高壓水箱中，逐漸地將壓力提到600兆帕，相當於最深的馬裡亞納海溝的水壓的6倍。就這樣，那些參加試驗的熊蟲絕大部分都經受了這種對許多動物來說簡直不可想象的考驗。
