追溯中秋賞月的來歷，據《長安玩月詩序》載：“秋之於時，後夏先冬；八月於秋，季始孟終；十五之夜，又月之中。稽於天道，則寒暑均，取於月數，則蟾魄圓。”也就是說，八月十五在秋季八月中間，故曰：“中秋”。為何人們鍾情中秋賞月呢?有詩道：“明月四時有，何事喜中秋?瑤臺寶鑑，宜掛玉宇最高頭；放出白豪千丈，散作太虛一色。萬象入吾眸，星斗避光彩，風露助清幽。”

從時令上說，中種是“秋收節”，春播夏種的穀物到了秋天就該收穫了，自古以來，人們便在這個季節飲酒舞蹈，喜氣洋洋地慶祝豐收，這在我國最早的詩歌總集《詩經》中就有描繪。從淵源上說，中秋又是“祭月節”，它源於遠古人類對自然的崇拜。古代帝王的禮制中有春秋二祭：春祭日，秋祭月。最初祭月的日子在“秋分”這一天，“秋分”這個季節在八月內每年不同，所以秋分這一天不一定有月亮，祭月無月是大煞風景的，逐漸約定俗成，祭月的日子固定在八月十五日。從科學觀察來看，秋季地球與太陽的傾斜度加大，華夏大地上空的暖溼空氣逐漸消退，而此時，西北風還很微弱。如此，溼氣已去，沙塵未起，空氣即顯得格外清新，天空特別潔淨，月亮看上去既圓又大，是賞月的最佳時節。恰如古詩所云：“光輝皎潔，古今但賞中秋月，尋思豈是月華別?都為人間天上氣清澈。”

民間中秋賞月活動約始魏晉時期，盛於唐宋。據宋朱翌《曲消舊聞》說：’中秋玩月，不知起於何時?考古人賦詩，則始於杜子美。”瀏覽唐詩，中秋賞月詩確有多篇，如王建有詩云：“月似圓盛色漸凝，玉盆盛水欲侵稜。夜深盡放家人睡，直到天明不炷燈。”徐凝的詩云：“皎皎秋月八月圓，嫦娥端正桂枝鮮；一年無似如今夜，十二峰前看不眠。”

宋代，民間中秋賞月之風更加興盛。據《東京夢華錄》對北宋京都賞月盛況有這樣的描寫“中秋夕，貴家結飾臺榭，民家爭佔酒樓，玩月笙歌，遠聞千里，嬉我連坐至曉”。《新編醉翁談錄》記載：“傾城人家子女不以貧富能自行至十二三，皆以成人之服服飾之，登樓或於中庭拜月，各有所期：男則願早步蟾宮，高攀仙桂；女則願貌似嫦娥，圓如皓月。”

明清以後，每逢中秋，一輪圓月東昇時，人們便在庭院、樓臺，擺出月餅、柚子、石榴、芋頭、核桃、花生、西瓜等果品，邊賞月，邊暢談，直到皓月當空，再分食供月果品，其樂融融。在我國的少數民族地區，中秋這一天，還舉行別具特色的“拜月”、“鬧月”、“行月”、“跳月”、“偷月”等豐富多彩的活動。

碧空如洗，圓月如盤。人們在盡情賞月之際，會情不自禁地想念遠遊在外、客居異鄉的親人。因此，中秋節還有“團圓節”之稱。許多古詩表達了人們此時的思念之情。唐人殷文圭《八月十五夜》：“萬里無雲境九州，最團圓夜是中秋。”王建《十五夜望月寄杜朗中》詩云：“今夜月明人盡望，不知秋思落誰家。”中國人歷來把家人團圓、親友團聚，共享天倫之樂看得極其珍貴，歷來有“花好月圓人團聚”之謂。
