出生於非洲的包括希爾薇亞（妮可·基德曼飾），性感迷人、聰明能乾、還是聯合國口譯員。不過，一天她無意間聽到一項暗殺陰謀，物件是即將在XXX大會發表演說的一位非洲國家元首，在商討暗殺陰謀的人用的正是包括希爾薇亞在內的只有少數人才聽得懂的非洲土語。希爾薇亞當然迅速將情況上報，可被捲入陰謀的她很快也成為兇手的追殺物件，密勤局指派探員託賓·凱勒（西恩·潘飾）負責她的安全。但本來就不太信任希爾薇亞的託賓在調查過程中更意外發現希爾薇亞過去黑暗複雜的一面，他對希爾薇亞的懷疑日漸加深，甚至認為她正是涉及到這起陰謀。在爾虞我詐的陰謀之中，兩人相互合作、相互猜疑，卻也開始共同分享自己的難堪過去，逐漸產生了一段似有若無的微妙感情。該相信誰？誰才是真正的嫌犯？政治暗殺行動能否及時被阻止？
