人造地球衛星指環繞地球飛行並在空間軌道執行一圈以上的無人航天器。簡稱人造衛星。 人造衛星是發射數量最多，用途最廣，發展最快的航天器。主要用於科學探測和研究、天氣預報、土地資源調查、土地利用、區域規劃、通訊、跟蹤、導航等各個領域。 世界上第一顆人造地球衛星號運載火箭是一枚一級半型的火箭，也就是中間是一枚單級火箭，四周捆綁4個助推火箭（助推器）。衛星號運載火箭全長29.167米，起飛時總重267.3噸，起飛推力達3 904.4千牛。
