The Dogs in Yue Bark at Snow粵犬吠雪

In the past, I heard people say:

"Formerly, it was often cloudy and drizzly for days on end in the south of the juncture of Sichuan, Shaanxi and Hubei, with very few fine days in between. When the sun shone occasionally, the dogs would bark consistently without stop."

I never quite believe this kind of talk, and consider it exaggerated.

Six or seven years ago, I came to the south. In the winter of the following year, there was a heavy snow rarely seen before. It crossed the Naming Mountain and covered several prefectures in the southern part of Yue ***Guangdong Province***. Consequently, the dogs in these prefectures were all panic-stricken. They barked wildly and ran about in confusion for several days in succession. It wasn't until the weather had cleared and the snow melted that they became quiet.

Only by then did I believe that it was likely that the dogs in Shu ***Sichuan Province*** barked at the sun.

Of course there is nothing wrong with sunrise or snowing. In fact, the dogs just consider these phenomena strange out of ignorance!

Covering the Eye with a Leaf一葉障目

In the State of Chu, there was a man whose family was very poor. Even at night he often dreamt of striking it rich, but he never worked hard.

One day, when he was leafing through the book Huainan Zi, he came across a line saying: "When the mantis preys on the cicada, it relies entirely upon a leaf to conceal its body." He thought that if one could get such a leaf, one could become invisible.

Thereupon, he ran into the woods, looking for just such a leaf among the branches. He had searched a long time before he discovered a mantis hiding itself behind a leaf and waiting to catch a cicada. He climbed up the tree at once, and plucked the leaf. But he was in such a big hurry that, out of carelessness, the leaf dropped to the ground. There were many, many fallen leaves on the ground. How could he identify the leaf he had plucked? So he had to put all the leaves into a bamboo basket and carry them home.

As soon as he got home, he held up one leaf after another in turn to cover his eye, and kept asking his wife:

  "Can you see me?"

In the beginning, his wife always answered: "Yes, T can."

After a long time, she began to feel weird: What was the matter with her husband today? Why did he keep holding up a leaf and asking her the same question?

He did this over and over again for one whole day. In the end, his wife got impatient and humoured him by saying: "No, I can't."

Hearing this, he became wild with joy. He turned and ran out to the street. Holding the leaf in one hand, he grabbed with the other hand the goods in a shop. But before he could withdraw his hand, he was caught on the spot and handed over to the local yamen.

Grinding a Brick into a Mirror磨磚成鏡

In the Tang Dynasty, there was a Guanyin ***Avalokitesvara*** Temple on the Southern Mountain of Hengshan. The temple was stately and solemn, with incense smoke curling all around.

One day, the eminent Monk Huai Rang of the Chan sect strolled into the temple hall and saw Monk Ma Zu sitting calm and upright on a rush cushion, with his palms put together and his eyes closed in deep meditation.

Knowing that Ma Zu aspired to become a Buddha, Huai Rang smiled to himself. He picked up a brick at random, squatted on his heels and began to grind it noisily.

Ma Zu was vexed by the noise. He opened his eyes to find that it was his own master grinding a brick. He asked:

  "Master, what are you doing?"

  Huai Rang replied:

"I am grinding the brick to make a mirror."

  Ma Zu laughed and said:

"Can a brick be ground into a mirror?"

"If a brick cannot be ground into a mirror,”replied Huai Rang, "then can you become a Buddha by sitting in deep meditation?"

Ma Zu was rather displeased, and said:

  "What do you mean?"

  Huai Rang explained:

"For example, an ox pulls a cart, but the cart doesn't move. Now, you say, should you whip the ox or push the cart?"

Ma Zu hummed and hawed but couldn't answer.

At this moment, Huai Rang said to him seriously:

"You learn to sit in meditation in order to become a Buddha. In fact, it relies on wisdom and comprehension of the mind to become one, not at all on sitting.

"As for a Buddha, he has no fixed appearance, so the mind cannot fix on any single object. If you try to learn Buddhism by sitting in meditation, that would amount to throttling a Buddha. If you obstinately dwell on external appearance, you will never comprehend the real Buddhist doctrine."
