Lily: Am I invisible now? Can you still see me?

Jake: What are you talking about? Are you smoking weed again?

Lily: No. Why do you think that? I would never ever touch that. I am reading the magazine. Rumor has it that a German scientist invented sort of invisible cape.

Jake: Shut up! You mean the Harry Potter cape?

Lily: Not exactly. You can still see it with your eyes.

Jake: Bummer. Those powerful men are just bluffing. They know nothing.

Lily: For the moment the cloaking device is only working for microwave frequencies. But I think it will for infrared light someday.

Jake: Are you dreaming too much or you are just in a very good mood? Where is my negative Lily? The girl who never said what ifs?

Lily: Matt finally asked me out to the prom yesterday.

Jake: Way to go, girl! I am so thrilled for you. Go for it.

A:what’s the area of your country?

B: it’s not very big. It’s a little over half a million square kilometers.

A; that sounds quite big! How many people live there?

B; there are about 30 million people in my country. Most of them live in the north.

  A: what’s the average income?

B; that’s the really hard to say. I think most people earn about two thousand dollars a month, ifyou convert the money from our currency into dollars.

A; so your country is fairly rich.

B: I think we are richer than most countries, but not as rich as countries in western Europe. Ourbiggest problem at the moment is unemployment, which is roughly 8%. It has doubled over thelast four years.

A: unemployment in my country is a fraction of that.

  Intermediate

  A: what’s “pi”?

B: that’s the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter, I think.

A; I see. What is that ratio exactly?

B: it’s approximately 3.14, but the number continues forever. What’s the diameter of your circle?

A: it’s 10 centimeters, so the circumference should be 31.4 centimeters.

B; ok. My next problem is to convert 10000 british pounds into us dollars. What’s the exchangerate at the moment?

A: according to the newspaper, the exchange rate is 1.85 dollars to the pound.

B: that means that 10.000 pounds will buy me 18.500 dollars.

  A: what’s the next question.

B; fractions. What’s a quarter and an eighth? That’s three-eights. Easy. The next question is “whatare prime numbers?”.

A: I can help you there. Those are numbers that cannot be created by multiplying two wholenumbers, apart from the number itself and 1, together.

  B; so, 1,2 and 3 are prime numbers, but 4 isn’t because 2*2=4.

  A: exactly. Anything else?

B; how many seconds in an hour? 60 seconds multiplied by 60 minutes equals 3600 secondsaltogether.

  A: you’ll be a mathematician one day.

A: in my country, many people enjoy golf, but it is too expensive for some people. A few peoplelike extreme sports, but I think the vast majority of people are afraid to try them.

B: extreme sports are only for a small minority of people. Several people from my university enjoythem, but most of us just watch. No one I know plays golf.

A: I know loads of people who play it regularly. There are plenty of golf courses around thecountry. In the past, only a tiny number of people played.

B: a great deal of people follow rugby in my country.

A: there are plenty of rugby fans in my country too.

  Intermediate

A: what do we need to get from the supermarket?

B: we need lots of things. I’ll make a list. We need a bag of sugar, a loaf of bread and a crate ofbeer.

A: a crate of beer? Why do we need that?

B: just joking. I would like to get a few bottles of beer though. We also need a liter of cooking oil.

A: we can buy a three-liter bottle. It works out cheaper per liter. We should buy a packet of butterand a few pints of milk too.

B: I’d like to get a jar of strawberry jam and a bottle of tomato ketchup. Do we need any meat?

A; I think we should get half a kilo of minced beef and a few pork chops.

B: ok. Let’s not forget fruit and vegetables. We need a bunch of bananas, a kilo of tomatoes and abag of potatoes.

A: we should also get a tube of toothpaste and a bar of soap. Let’s get a tub of ice cream too. Wecan treat ourselves.

B: ok. We should get a few tins of tuna. Anything else?

A; I’d like a few cans of coke. We also need a dozen eggs and half a dozen sausages.
