Carnegie spent almost twenty years left to him giving his wealth away. He believed that those who became rich should return what they did not need to society. He had said that a rich man "dies disgraced" if he does not use the ability he has shown ingathering money to give away his money for the public good during his lifetime.

He began to use his money to build free public libraries. In 1919 it was said that his money had built almost 3,000 libraries, valued altogether at over sixty million dollars. Most of these were in the United States, but some of them were in Canada, Great Britain, New Zealand, and even as far as the Fiji Islands.

A gift of four million dollars was made to Carnegie's hometown, Dunfermline, Scotland. It was used to build parks and playgrounds for the people of the town. Pittsburgh, where he made his fortune, was given a music hall, a museum, an art gallery, and a public library.

Andrew Carnegie's public gifts amounted to almost three hundred and thirty million dollars. He gave one million, five hundred thousand dollars to the Peace Palace at the Hague in the Netherlands. After the war began in Europe in 1914, he gave his home, Skibo Castle in Scotland, to the British Government for use as an army hospital.

Charity organization

When people suffer some natural disasters and are confronted with difficulties, they mayexpect the aid from others, especially charity organizations. However, there is an opinion thatcharity organizations should help people of their own country instead of giving aid to whoeverin need. From my perspective, the aid should be given to those in need regardless of theirnationality.

Natural disasters, war or social turmoil, all these factors may render people fall intopoverty and diseases. The rise of charity organizations is associated with the emergence ofthese disasters. They relieve people from great sufferings and give people in need hope ofsurvival. However, there is an opinion that aid from charities should only be given to peopleliving in their countries while others think that charity should benefit all people. I tend tobelieve the latter is of more justification.

To help those in great needs is a reflection of moral obligation/duty for human beings.意義 And this practice of helping others will have numerous/many positive effectsinvolving/including promoting economic development and enhancing social harmony. Meanwhile, the aid from charity organizations may cover a wide range of people and may bemore transparent. However, there are some disadvantages of charity organizations. Themoney donated by charity organizations may be taken away by local officials and cannot reachthose who are really in need. What’s more, charity organizations tend to give aid to thoseareas which are frequently reported by the media. This will cause regional imbalance or evenregional conflict.

As for those who advocate that aid for charity organization should be given to peopleliving in their own country, I hold conservative attitude. There is no denying that it is moreeffective for charity organizations to give aid to local people. However, how to ensurefairness/equality among different peoples is the priority for charities. Fair distribution ofresources and aid is an objective reflection of human virtues. 反證If every individual or everyorganization just focus on their own interest, the world will become indifferent andunfriendly.

In conclusion, charity organization should give aid to people who are in great needwithout considering their social background, their nationality and something irrelevant. However, the aid should be supervised and monitored by some independent organizations forfear of corruption or embezzlement. / However, the aid should be controlled or supervisedby some dependent organizations so that it can reach the targeted people.

  :The kindness of strangers

How much empathy do you feel towards other people? If you saw someone fall off their bike in traffic, would you stop and help - or just walk away? Many people would give in to apathy, go about their business and just do nothing. So it was a big surprise when about 100 bystanders got together recently to move a bus in east London to help a cyclist trapped under it. A video of the incident went viral on social media.

According to Zoheb, a driver who stopped his car to take part in the rescue, about five people gathered to move the bus. He says: "There was no chance we could do it, it was more an invitation for other people to help, really."

The initiative paid off. Diners from nearby restaurants joined in. There wasn't much coordination but it didn't take long to develop a collectiveunderstanding of what the objective was.

Spontaneous collaboration among strangers doesn't happen often. People in a crowd are not sure what to do - they don't have a plan. It's one of the reasons bystanders often do nothing, according to Dr Mark Levine, professor of social psychology at Exeter University in Britain. "The presence of others can inhibit you from helping", he says.

The key to positive group behaviour and intervention, Levine explains, "is building a sense of shared identity". Action has to be decided quickly, Levine says. "The longer you leave it, the harder it is to make a decision. If you don't immediately act then you kind of think 'Well, actually I probably couldn't have done anything anyway'."

But the people who took the initiative like Zoheb might make a difference. The cyclist ended up in hospital and the images of the collective effort might inspire others to more acts of solidarity.
