汙染物是指直接或間接損害環境或人類健康的物質，汙染物有自然界產生的，如火山爆發、森林大火產生的煙塵；也有人類活動產生的，環境科學主要研究和關注人類活動產生的汙染物。 汙染物是在特定的環境中，達到一定的濃度或數量，持續一定的時間的某些環境不需要的物質。並不一定是有毒物質。例如氮和磷本來是植物必須的營養元素，但當在水體中達到一定的濃度，持續一定的時間而不能被稀釋，就會成為水體富營養化的主要元兇，使有害藻類迅速繁殖，魚類等水生動物會因為缺氧而窒息死亡。
