衰老（ageing）指在正常狀況下生物體發育成熟後，隨年齡的增加，自身組織結構逐步發生退行性變化，機體器官的機能減退，內環境自穩能力減弱、對內外環境損傷因素的抵抗力降低，趨向死亡的自然現象。 老化是指高分子材料在加工、貯存和使用過程中，由於受內外因素的綜合作用，其效能逐漸變壞，以致最後喪失使用價值的現象。老化是一種不可逆的變化，它是高分子材料的通病。但是人們可以透過對高分子老化過程的研究，採取適當的防老化措施，提高材料的耐老化的效能，延緩老化的速率，以達到延長使用壽命的目的。
