V乃英語字母表中兩個最年輕的字母之一（另一個為J），它於莎士比亞時代以後，約1630年出現。但V同時又是U，W，Y等三個字母的祖先，甚至連F也可以說是從V派生出來的。V源於約公元前1000年腓尼基字母表中的第6個象形字母，該字母酷似今日之英語字母Y，叫做waw，意為“木栓”或“木釘”。公元前900年以後，希臘人借用了該字母，並由此衍生出兩個字母，一個後來演變為英語字母F，另一個則演變為V和Y。在19世紀以前V和U這兩個字母原來是不分的，可以互換的。
