漢字，氣，是中國哲學、道教和中醫學中常見的概念。中國春秋戰國時代的思想家，將氣的概念，抽象化，成為天地一切事物組成的基本元素，有著像氣體般的流動特性。認為人類與一切生物具備的生命能量或動力，也被稱為是氣，宇宙間的一切事物，均是氣的執行與變化的結果。中醫學認為氣是人體的第一道防護線，聚於體裡保護著臟腑，而流散發於膚表以防外邪侵入而導致疾病發生。 沒有一定的形狀、體積，能自由散佈的物體：氣體。

王充《論衡》：“天地氣合，萬物自生。”張載《正蒙·太和篇》：“太虛不能無氣，氣不能不聚而為萬物，萬物不能不散而為太虛。”氣分陰陽，提示質與能的統一，以及萬物由氣所化的原理。反映於人，則生命的維持全賴於氣，它是一切組織活動的營養所繫，如精氣、津氣、水谷之氣、呼吸之氣等。又是一切組織器官的機能活力，如臟腑之氣、經絡之氣等。在生理上，大致可分原氣、衛氣、營氣和宗氣等。但一般概念均以氣作陽氣，強調機能方面，故在病機上，氣亢指機能過盛的火熱之證；氣虛即為機能衰退、陰寒瀰漫之證；氣的障礙則為氣鬱、氣逆或變生閉厥瘀滯諸證。此外，氣的概念還引申於各個方面，如致病物質的邪氣、溼氣、癘氣等；病機或病證的厥氣、肝氣、水氣等；藥物性質的寒熱溫涼四氣和針灸效應的得氣等。
