華南虎（拉丁學名：Panthera tigris Amoyensis）是貓科豹屬動物，為中國特有的虎亞種，亦稱“中國虎”，在野外已滅絕，國家一級保護動物。 華南虎頭圓，耳短，四肢粗大有力，尾較長，胸腹部雜有較多的乳白色，全身橙黃色並佈滿黑色橫紋，毛皮上有既短又窄的條紋，條紋的間距較孟加拉虎、西伯利亞虎的大，體側還常出現菱形紋，在亞種老虎中體型較小，以草食性動物野豬、鹿、狍等為食。華南虎是典型的山地林棲動物，生活在中國南方的熱帶雨林、常綠闊葉林，也常出沒于山脊、矮林灌叢和礫石塘等山地落葉闊葉林和針闊葉混交林地帶。多單獨生活，不成群，多在夜間活動，嗅覺發達，行動敏捷，善於游泳，但不善於爬樹，僅在中國分佈，生活在中國中南部。 1996年，聯合國釋出的《瀕危野生動植物國際公約》將華南虎列為第一號瀕危物種，列為世界十大瀕危物種之首。

《華南虎》是牛漢寫於1973年6月的一首詩。 《華南虎》的創作背景是“十年動亂”的特定時空，詩文描寫了一隻被囚禁在鐵籠裡供人觀看、呵斥、捉弄的華南虎的遭遇。作者以喻指的手法把環境典型化，把虎人化，以此來寫一個不屈的生命，來展示一個執著的靈魂。該詩控訴了製造苦難歷史的十年浩動，嘲諷了冷漠與麻木的“圍觀者”，頌讚了頑強的生命，同時也傾訴了作者自己熾熱的情感。
